Goals in incentive plans

Incentive plans pay variable compensation (bonuses) based on how much of their goals people attain. You build the plan and choose its goals in the incentive plans area. This article covers the goals side: where you see which plans use a goal, and what an active plan prevents you from changing on that goal. To create and run incentive plans, see Incentive plans.

Before you start

  • To see a goal's incentive plans, you need Manage incentive plans in Settings > Permissions > Incentives.
  • Your company plan must include Compensations. Without it, the goal's Incentive plans tab shows "Reward the goals your team achieves" and a way to request it.

Steps

See which incentive plans use a goal

  1. Go to Performance > Goals and click the goal.
  2. Click the Incentive plans tab, next to Sub-goals.
  3. Read the list: Plan, Status (Draft, Active or Archived), Recurrence and People. Click a plan to open it.
  4. If no plan uses the goal, the tab shows "No incentive plans yet" and "Link an incentive plan to reward progress on this goal."

 Rules and behavior

  • If a goal belongs to an Active incentive plan, then Delete goal shows "This goal can't be deleted" and "Remove this goal from the incentive plan to delete it."
  • If a goal belongs to an Active incentive plan, then its Goal period and Target frequency can't be edited. The goal wizard shows "Period and frequency can't be changed" and "Remove this goal from the incentive plan to change the period and frequency".
  • If every plan that uses a goal is Draft or Archived, then the goal can be deleted and its period and frequency can be changed.
  • If you delete a goal that an Archived plan used, then the goal disappears from that archived plan's goals, and the plan's payout history keeps the goal's name.
  • An incentive plan reads each goal's attainment for the period that matches the plan's period. Keep goal periods aligned with the plan's recurrence.
  • Goals measured Based on sub-goals can be used in incentive plans. Their attainment comes from their sub-goals.
  • Goal weights set with Assign weights are separate from the weight each goal has inside an incentive plan.
  • Incentive plans can also be built with One. This is available to admins with Manage incentive plans only. See Ask One about reviews, feedback, competencies and incentive plans.

Limitations

  • You can't link a goal to an incentive plan from the goal page. Goals are added from the incentive plan.
  • You can't delete or re-period a goal while an active plan uses it, even if you have Manage key results.
  • Users without Manage incentive plans can't see which plans use a goal.

 Troubleshooting

  • Symptom: "I can't delete a goal." → Cause: An Active incentive plan uses it. → Fix: Remove the goal from the plan, or archive the plan, then delete the goal. See Edit, duplicate or delete a goal.
  • Symptom: "The period and frequency fields are disabled when I edit a goal." → Cause: An Active incentive plan uses the goal, or the goal has a weight, or it belongs to a parent goal measured Based on sub-goals. → Fix: Read the note under the fields. It names the reason.
  • Symptom: "There is no Incentive plans tab on the goal." → Cause: You don't have Manage incentive plans, and your company can't request Compensations. → Fix: Ask an admin.
