Keyboard layouts and localisation

Explore various keyboard layouts and localization techniques to enhance typing efficiency and accessibility across different languages.

The keyboard you choose when ordering a device decides whether it can use Zero-Touch Deployment (ZTD). Read this before ordering devices for a country other than the usual one, or with a non-standard layout.

Feature/Functionality

Overview

ZTD only works when the order goes to a supplier authorised for ZTD in the delivery country. The keyboard you pick decides which supplier gets the order.

Local keyboard (recommended). Factorial IT uses the standard keyboard for the delivery country and sends the order to a ZTD-authorised supplier. For example:

  • France: AZERTY
  • Belgium: QWERTY BE
  • Germany: QWERTZ DE
  • United Kingdom: QWERTY UK
  • United States: QWERTY US

Specific layout. You can choose QWERTY US, QWERTY UK, QWERTY International, QWERTZ, Spanish QWERTY or AZERTY. If that layout is not the local one for the delivery country, ZTD is switched off for the order.

How to use

  1. Start a device order.
  2. Under keyboard, choose Local keyboard if you need ZTD.
  3. Only pick a specific layout if the employee really needs it and you can do without ZTD.

ZTD availability by region

Delivery region Local keyboard ZTD Non-local keyboard ZTD
EU AZERTY in France; local QWERTY in the EU Yes QWERTY US / UK / International No
UK QWERTY UK Yes AZERTY / QWERTY US / QWERTZ No
US QWERTY US Yes AZERTY / QWERTY UK / QWERTZ No

Common scenarios

  • Delivering to the United States. Local keyboard gives you ZTD. QWERTY International or AZERTY does not.
  • Delivering to France. Local keyboard (AZERTY) gives you ZTD. QWERTY US or QWERTY International does not.
  • Delivering to France, but the team needs QWERTY US. The standard ordering flow in Factorial IT cannot provide ZTD. See the FAQ for your options.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Pick Local keyboard by default. It is the only choice that always keeps ZTD available.
  • Do not select AZERTY by hand outside France. It sends the order to a French supplier that cannot deliver with ZTD elsewhere.
  • Plan ahead for special requests. A non-local layout with ZTD takes 3 to 4 weeks, if suppliers can do it at all.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

Troubleshooting

  • ZTD is not available on an order. Check the keyboard. Any layout that is not local to the delivery country disables ZTD. Switch to Local keyboard.
  • AZERTY was chosen but ZTD is still unavailable. The delivery address is outside France. Choose Local keyboard instead.

FAQ

  1. Why can I not get ZTD with QWERTY International in France?
ZTD relies on supplier accreditations that are tied to a region. In France, only the suppliers that ship AZERTY keyboards are accredited for Apple Business or Microsoft Autopilot. A non-local keyboard sends the order to another supplier, which is not authorised for ZTD there.

  2. Can I order QWERTY US devices for France?
    Yes, in two ways:
    1. Standard order without ZTD. Choose QWERTY US. The devices arrive ready to use, but without Zero-Touch Deployment.
    2. Special request, longer lead time. Add a comment to the order asking for "QWERTY US + Apple Business". Factorial IT checks with suppliers whether it is possible. Expect 3 to 4 weeks.
  3. Does choosing AZERTY always give me ZTD?
No. Outside France, AZERTY sends the order to a French ZTD-authorised supplier that cannot fulfil it, so ZTD is not available. Choose Local keyboard to be sure of ZTD.
