What is Jira?
Jira is Atlassian's issue-tracking and project-management tool.
With the Jira integration, Factorial keeps your Jira users in line with your employee records. When you add an employee in Factorial, a Jira user is created for them automatically, and when you remove the employee, their Jira user is removed too. This simplifies user access management and saves you from creating and removing Jira users by hand.
Overview
- The integration handles user provisioning only: it creates and removes Jira users
- A Jira user is created when an employee is created in Factorial, and removed when the employee is deleted or terminated
- Only the employee's email is sent to Jira. It is used as the Jira user's email address
- The integration works with Jira Cloud and connects using your Jira site URL, an admin email and an Atlassian API token
- The integration is available in the Factorial Marketplace and is free of charge
Before you start
Make sure you have:
- Access to install integrations from the Marketplace in Factorial
- A Jira Cloud site
- A Jira admin account that can manage users
- An Atlassian API token for that admin account
How to set up the integration
Step 1: Create an Atlassian API token
- Log in to id.atlassian.com with the Jira admin account
- Go to Account settings > Security > API tokens
- Click Create API token
- Copy the token. This is the API token you will enter in Factorial
Also note down the email of the admin account and your Jira site URL (for example, https://yourcompany.atlassian.net).
Your API token gives access to your Atlassian account. Keep it secret and do not share it.
Step 2: Install the integration in Factorial
- In your Factorial sidebar, go to Marketplace
- Search for Jira and open it
- Click Install
- In the install form, enter your Site URL, Admin email and API token
- Submit the form to complete the connection
Once connected, user provisioning runs automatically: a Jira user is created each time an employee is added in Factorial, and removed when the employee is deleted or terminated.
Key roles and responsibilities
| Role | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Your company | Install the integration from the Marketplace; provide the Jira site URL, admin email and API token; make sure the admin account can manage users in Jira; keep employee emails in Factorial accurate so users are created correctly. |
| Factorial | Builds and maintains the integration and provides support through the Factorial Support team. |
Tips and best practices
Keep employee emails up to date: the employee's email in Factorial is the only data sent to Jira, so make sure it is correct before adding the employee.
Use a dedicated admin account: connect the integration with an admin account that can manage users in Jira, so user creation and removal are not interrupted.
