Goal weights let you give each of an employee's individual goals a percentage that shows how much it counts compared with the person's other goals. Weights are set per person and per group of goals that share the same period and frequency, and each group must add up to 100%. You set them from the employee side panel with Assign weights.
Before you start
- You need Update key results' progress in Settings > Permissions > Goals, with a scope that covers the employee. People without it can open the same dialog in read-only mode.
- Only individual goals can be weighted: goals assigned to this one person only. Team, legal entity, job role, company and multi-person goals can't be weighted.
- Goals are weighted together only when they have exactly the same period and Target frequency. For example, "2026 · Yearly" goals are weighted separately from "Q4 2026 · Monthly" goals.
Steps
Assign weights
- Go to Performance > Goals and click Employees in the view bar.
- Click the employee's name in the group header to open the side panel.
- Under Individual goals, find the period group you want to weight, for example "2026 · Yearly".
- Click Assign weights in that group's header. The Edit weights dialog opens.
- Type a percentage between 0 and 100 next to each goal, or click Distribute weights equally to split 100% evenly.
- Check the message at the bottom:
- "Weights add up to 100%." You can save.
- "X left to distribute." Add the missing percentage.
- "The total is X over 100%. Reduce some weights to continue." Lower some weights.
- Click Save. The message Goal weights saved confirms the change, and the Weight column of the side panel shows each goal's weight.

See weights without editing them
- Open the employee's side panel as described in "Assign weights".
- Read the Weight column under Individual goals.
- If you click Assign weights without the permission to edit, the dialog opens as Individual goal weights in read-only mode with a Close button.

Rules and behavior
- If the weights of a group don't add up to exactly 100%, then Save stays disabled.
- If you click Distribute weights equally, then 100% is split evenly across all goals in the group, with any rounding difference placed on the last goals so the total is exactly 100%. For example, three goals get 33.33%, 33.33% and 33.34%.
- If you leave a goal's weight empty and save, then that goal is saved with a weight of 0%.
- If you save weights for a group, then every goal in that group has a weight, including goals at 0%.
- If a goal has a weight, then its Goal period and Target frequency are locked. The goal wizard shows "Period and frequency can't be changed". To unlock them, set the goal's weight to 0% in Edit weights.
- If you set a goal's weight to 0%, then the goal no longer counts in the weighting of its group, and it can be deleted.
- If you delete a weighted goal, then its weight is shared among the remaining goals of the group in proportion to their weights, so the group still adds up to 100%.
- If the last weighted goal of a group is deleted, then the group's weights are removed.
- If the list of goals in the group changes while the dialog is open, then saving fails with "The list of goals changed since this form was opened. Reload and try again."
- A goal's weight does not change that goal's own progress. It changes the group's overall progress in the side panel, the Employees view, the attainment cards on the goals list, the Home widget and the profile card.
Example: deleting a weighted goal. A group has three goals weighted 50%, 30% and 20%. Deleting the 20% goal leaves 50% and 30%, which are rescaled to keep their proportion: 62.5% and 37.5%.
Example: equal split. Four goals with Distribute weights equally get 25% each.
Limitations
- You can't weight collective goals (team, legal entity, job role, company or several people).
- You can't weight goals with different periods or frequencies together.
- You can't set weights for several employees at once.
- You can't weight sub-goals separately from a parent goal of the same person. Only the person's top-level individual goals are weighted.
- You can't weight goals from the goal wizard or the goal detail page. Weights are only set from Assign weights in the employee side panel.
Troubleshooting
- Symptom: "Save is greyed out." → Cause: The weights don't add up to exactly 100%, or a value is outside 0–100. → Fix: Follow the message under the list, or click Distribute weights equally.
- Symptom: "The dialog says 'No goals to weight'." → Cause: The employee has no individual goals in that period and frequency. → Fix: Add individual goals first with New Goal in the side panel.
- Symptom: "I can't change the period of a goal." → Cause: The goal has a weight. The wizard shows "Period and frequency can't be changed". → Fix: Click Assign weights for that group, set the goal's weight to 0%, adjust the other weights so they add up to 100% and click Save.
- Symptom: "A team goal is missing from Edit weights." → Cause: Only goals assigned to this one person can be weighted. → Fix: None. Collective goals are not weighted.
- Symptom: "Saving fails with 'Some goals weighted together for this person no longer share the same timeframe'." → Cause: A goal's dates or frequency changed so it no longer matches the group. → Fix: Reload the side panel and weight each group again.
FAQ
1. Do weights have to add up to 100%?
Yes. Each group of an employee's goals with the same period and frequency must add up to 100%.
2. Can an employee set their own weights?
Only if they have Update key results' progress with a scope that covers themselves. Otherwise they see their weights in read-only mode.
3. How do I take a goal out of an employee's weighting?
Click Assign weights for the goal's group, set the goal's weight to 0%, make sure the other weights add up to 100% and click Save. A goal with a 0% weight can be deleted.
4. Who used to need "Weight employee goals"?
That permission belonged to the previous goals experience and is no longer shown. Weights now use Update key results' progress.
