Assign a goal to people, teams or the company

The Assign to field of the New goal wizard decides who a goal is for: specific Employees, one or more Team, Legal entity or Role, or the Whole company. A goal assigned to exactly one employee is an Individual goal; any other goal is a Collective (shared, team or company) goal. With Create an individual goal for each person, you can also create a separate individual goal for every person in a selection in one go.

Before you start

  • Cascading goals (parent goals, sub-goals and the Based on sub-goals type of metric) are available on the Enterprise plan.
  • You need Goals > Create key results.
  • To assign a goal to a Team, Legal entity, Role or the Whole company, your Create key results permission needs the scope For the whole company. With any other scope, Assign to only offers Employees, limited to the employees inside your scope.
  • Decide whether everyone should contribute to one shared goal (collective) or each person should have their own goal (individual). Only individual goals can be weighted.

Steps

Assign a goal

  1. Go to Performance > Goals and click New Goal.
  2. In Assign to, open the first selector ("Select a type") and choose one of the options below.
  3. In the second selector, choose who the goal is for.
  4. Complete the rest of the wizard and click Submit.
Assign to What you select Result
Employees One or more employees (no limit) One employee = Individual goal. Several employees = one Collective goal shared by all of them
Team Up to 10 teams One Collective goal for every member of those teams
Legal entity Up to 10 legal entities One Collective goal for every employee of those legal entities
Role Up to 10 roles One Collective goal for every employee with those roles

Rules and behavior

  • If a goal is assigned with Employees to exactly one person, then its Type is Individual. In every other case its Type is Collective.
  • If a goal is assigned to a Team, Legal entity, Role or the Whole company, then its members update automatically: people who join the team, legal entity or role get the goal, and people who leave lose it. No edit is needed.
  • If a goal is assigned with Employees, then its members only change when someone edits the goal.
  • If your Create key results scope is not For the whole company, then you can only assign goals to employees inside your scope, and every selected employee must be inside it.
  • If you select more than 10 teams, legal entities or roles, then the wizard shows "You can select at most 10".
  • If you select Create an individual goal for each person, then each goal is created for one person, is an Individual goal, and you get an email when all goals are created or when the creation failed (in which case nothing is saved).
  • Create an individual goal for each person is only offered when you create a new goal from scratch. It is not offered when editing, when creating a sub-goal, or when creating a goal from an action plan.
  • A goal is visible to its members' managers and admins according to their See key results scope: a person sees a goal when at least one of its members is inside their scope, or when they created the goal.
  • Only Individual goals can be weighted in Edit weights.

Limitations

  • You can't assign a goal to a team, legal entity, role or the whole company unless your Create key results scope is For the whole company.
  • You can't combine types in one goal (for example one team plus two extra employees). Create separate goals, or select all the people under Employees.
  • You can't select more than 10 teams, legal entities or roles in one goal.
  • You can't mark a goal as public. Visibility comes from the members and the viewer's permissions.
  • You can't add sub-goals while using Create an individual goal for each person.

Troubleshooting

  • Symptom: "The type selector only shows Employees." → Cause: Your Create key results scope is not For the whole company. → Fix: Assign to individual employees, or ask an admin to create the team or company goal.
  • Symptom: "A new team member can't see the team goal." → Cause: If the goal was assigned with Employees (a hand-picked list), new team members are not added automatically. → Fix: Edit the goal and add the person, or reassign it with Team.
  • Symptom: "Saving fails with 'This collective has no members, so there is nobody to create goals for.'" → Cause: You used Create an individual goal for each person on a selection with no employees. → Fix: Pick a team, legal entity or role that has members.
  • Symptom: "The Assigned to cell is empty." → Cause: The goal's team or role was archived or deleted, or the goal has no members left. → Fix: Edit the goal and assign it again.

FAQ

1. How do I set the same sales target for every salesperson?

It appears for every employee whose permissions let them see goals of at least one company member, which normally includes themselves. It shows the company logo in Assigned to.

5. Can I change a team goal into individual goals later?
Not directly. Create new goals with Create an individual goal for each person and delete the team goal if you no longer need it.
