Edit or delete a competency

You change a competency's name, group or description with Edit competency, and remove a competency permanently with Delete, from Performance > Competencies. Deleting removes the competency, its levels and its links to jobs; it can't be undone.

Before you start

  • You need the Manage competencies permission.
  • Before deleting, check the competency's Jobs tab to see which jobs will lose it.

Steps

Edit a competency from the list

  1. Go to Performance > Competencies.
  2. In the Company competencies table, open the row actions (...) of the competency and click Edit.
  3. In Edit competency, change the Name, Group or Description.
  4. Click Save.

Edit a competency from its page

  1. Go to Performance > Competencies and click the competency name.
  2. In the competency header, click Edit.
  3. Change the Name, Group or Description and click Save.

The competency header also shows the Group, the number of Levels and the number of Assigned jobs.

Delete a competency

  1. Go to Performance > Competencies.
  2. Open the row actions (...) of the competency and click Delete.
  3. In the dialog "Are you sure you want to delete this competency?", type the competency name exactly as shown.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

Rules and behavior

  • If you rename a competency or change its description, then the change applies everywhere the competency is used, including the job catalog.
  • If you delete a competency, then its levels are deleted and every job linked to it loses the association.
  • If you delete a competency, then it is no longer added to new review questionnaires.
  • If you delete a competency, then the deletion can't be undone, and you can create a new competency with the same name afterwards.
  • If the Name field is empty, then Edit competency shows "can't be empty" and doesn't save.

Limitations

  • You can't archive or deactivate a competency; you can only delete it.
  • You can't restore a deleted competency.
  • You can't edit several competencies at once from the table. To create many, use Import competencies.
  • You can't duplicate a competency. Create a new one instead.
  • You can't edit levels from Edit competency; use the Levels tab.

Troubleshooting

  • Symptom: "The Delete confirmation button stays disabled." → Cause: The typed name doesn't match the competency name exactly. → Fix: Type the name exactly as shown in the dialog, including capital letters and spaces.
  • Symptom: "I can't rename a competency; it says the name is taken." → Cause: Another active competency already has that name. → Fix: Choose a different name or delete the other competency.
  • Symptom: "I don't see Edit or Delete in the row actions." → Cause: You don't have Manage competencies. → Fix: Ask an admin for the permission.

FAQ

1. Will deleting a competency remove it from an ongoing review?

Questionnaires that reviewers already received keep the competency questions they were given. The competency is no longer added to new questionnaires.

2. Can I move a competency to another group?

Yes. Open Edit competency and pick another Group.

3. Is there a history of changes to a competency?

No. Factorial doesn't show a change history for competencies.
