Teams can have sub-teams, helping you reflect your organisation's structure directly in Factorial. You can create team hierarchies, manage membership more easily, and build your team structure in bulk for new companies.
Overview
Teams are not to a flat structure. You can assign a parent team to any team, allowing you to organise teams into divisions, departments, squads, or other levels that match your company's structure.
Each team can have one parent team, and parent teams can have multiple sub-teams.
Team membership also propagates upwards. When someone is added to a team, they automatically count as a member of every parent team above it, so you don't need to add them to each parent team manually.
For example, you could organise your teams like this:
- Sales
- Enterprise
- SMB
- Partnerships

How to use
How to create a new sub-team
- In your sidebar, go to Organisation
- Click on +New team
- Assign a parent team to the new team
- Add people to the team (optional, you can do it later on)
- Click on Create team

How to assign a new parent team to an existing team
- Select a team
- In the three dots (…) on the right of the team, select Move team
- Choose a new parent team
- Click on Save

Their membership automatically counts toward all parent teams above their team.
For new companies, you can also build the hierarchy in bulk using the Teams Importer. When importing teams, assign the relevant parent team to each team.
If a person is not added directly to the parent team, this is expected. When someone belongs to a sub-team, they automatically count as a member of every parent team above it. You don't need to add them manually.
Tips and best practices
- Build your teams around your organisation's actual structure rather than adding hierarchy information to team names.
- Add people to their most specific team. Their membership will automatically propagate to the parent teams.
- Use clear, consistent team names to make your structure easier to navigate and manage.
- If you're setting up a new company, consider using the Teams Importer to create the hierarchy in bulk.
