Competencies assessment in peer reviews

Explore effective methods for evaluating competencies in peer reviews to enhance collaboration and improve team performance.

Table of Contents

Peers can now assess competencies during performance reviews when the competency assessment feature is enabled. This allows companies running 180°, 270°, or 360° review processes to collect more complete feedback and gain a broader understanding of each person’s competencies.

With this update, peer competency assessments are also reflected in the competencies spider chart and participant answer tables, helping managers and HR teams make more informed development decisions.

Overview

The competencies assessment feature allows peers to evaluate competencies as part of a performance review cycle.

Previously, competency evaluations were only available for self-reviews and manager reviews. With this improvement, peer reviewers can now provide competency-based feedback as well, creating a more complete and balanced evaluation process.

This functionality is available for performance reviews that:

  • Have the competency assessment feature enabled
  • Are launched after this release
  • Belong to companies with the Performance module included in their plan

When and why it should be used

Use competency assessments in peer reviews when your company wants to:

  • Collect more comprehensive feedback during performance reviews
  • Improve the quality of 180°, 270°, or 360° evaluations
  • Compare self, manager, and peer perspectives on competencies
  • Identify strengths and development areas with broader input

How to use

  1. In your sidebar, go to Performance
  2. Create or edit a performance review
  3. Click on Edit on the top of the page
  4. In Features, enable the toggle for Include competency assessment
  5. Click on Peer assignment
  6. Next to an employee, click on + to add peer reviewers
  7. Launch the performance review

Once the review is active:

  • Peer reviewers can access their assigned reviews
  • Competency questions will appear alongside the rest of the evaluation questions
  • Peers can submit competency ratings and feedback

After reviews are completed:

  1. Navigate to the participant detail page
  2. Review competency responses in the answer tables
  3. Open the competencies spider chart to compare:
    • Self-assessment scores
    • Manager scores
    • Peer scores

If competency questions are not visible to peers, make sure:

  • The competency assessment feature is enabled for the review cycle
  • The review was launched after this feature became available
  • Peer reviewers were correctly assigned before launch

If peer scores do not appear in the spider chart, check whether:

  • Peer reviewers have submitted their reviews
  • The review cycle includes competency questions
  • The participant has completed enough evaluations for results to display

If the issue persists, contact your support team.
